Diabetes History...
In 2001, 934,550 Americans died from diabetic symptoms being out-of-control. Consequently, the US figures were the most recent posted.
Eli Lily became a licensed manufacturer of the injectable insulin known as "New Wonder Drug." This drug was discovered in 1922, when Banting, Best and Macleod, three Canadian Nobel Prize winners were successful saving a fourteen-year old diabetic, girl, in toronto.
In 1933 a new rogue form of diabetes surfaced. The information was printed in a paper by Joslyn, Dublin, Marks and the American Journal of Medical Sciences. In the paper "Studies on Diabetes Mellitus", were views of a significant plague of a disease, very much like the early 1920's diabetes, except, it wasn't compatible with the Wonder Drug insulin. It was so detrimental until insulin treatment worsened, sometimes...killing patient.
The new disease was called "insulin-resistant diabetes" because of its increased diabetes blood sugar symptoms and poor reaction to insulin regimen. During 1930-1940 Physicians obtained an enormous amount of information on relationships involving diet and diabetes, with great success in treating it through diet.
At the turn of the century Diabetes had per-capita incidence of 0.0028% and by 1933 it zoomed up to 1,000% in the United States. This disease had destroyed the health of many Americans.
In 1950 serum insulin assays performed by the medical community rapidly divulged classic diabetes, characterizing, its sufficient and excessive blood insulin levels. The ineffective insulin made it incapable to reduce blood sugar. Since the disease was called diabetes for 20 years it was renamed Type II diabetes to differentiate from earlier Type 1 diabetes resulting by deficient insulin production of the Pancreas.
Another search for a drug for Type II diabetes began in 1950. The purpose was to be as effective as insulin and help support the symptoms of diabetes. However, it would be an ongoing lifetime therapy for the patient.
